Payment for Environmental Services and adoption of sustainable practices for forest conservation in Zambézia
Keywords:
PSA, Beekeeping, Fish Farming, Sustainable PracticesAbstract
We used cross-sectional data obtained by direct interview with 566 AFs including beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of the Payment for Environmental Services (PSA) Project taken randomly in the districts of Alto Molocue, Gilé, Maganja da Costa, Ilé and Mulevala in the Central Province of Zambézia. We estimated the multivariate Probit regression model, using the maximavirosimilitude method to measure the impact of implementing the PES approach on the adoption of sustainable practices. We found a positive and statistically significant influence of PSA on the adoption of beekeeping and fish farming; no statistically significant influence was observed on the adoption of practices related to the planting of trees on farms. Furthermore, we observed that the adoption of beekeeping increases with age and fish farming increases with literacy and for males, while tree planting increases with education and household size. Evidence suggests promoting PES as a valid alternative for adopting sustainable practices in communities.
