Solid waste management in the Province of Uíge-Angola

Abstract

The study on solid waste management in the Uíge province, Angola, represents a reflective analysis of the practices related to handling, collection, treatment, recycling, and final disposal of waste generated in the urban and peri-urban context of the region. The Uíge province was selected as a case study due to the significant increase in urban solid waste generation driven by population growth and accelerated urbanization, which highlights significant challenges in waste management. This makes the region representative with the aim of analyzing and proposing sustainable solutions that involve community participation, environmental education, and institutional strengthening. The research adopted an exploratory, qualitative approach based on the review of already published literature, cartographic methods, direct field observation, documentary analysis of public policies, and interviews with local managers and community members. The results indicate that solid waste management in the region faces significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and low community participation. Most waste is discarded in open-air dumps, contributing to environmental pollution and public health issues. In comparison, developed countries implement circular economy policies. The integration of technological solutions, such as automated collection systems and environmental monitoring, and environmental education programs, is essential to addressing the impacts of pollution. Solid waste management in Uíge province requires the implementation of more robust and inclusive public policies, proper infrastructure, and community engagement.
