Economic burden of chronic wounds on healthcare sustainability

Chronic wounds pose a significant challenge to the sustainability of the healthcare system due to their prolonged course, clinical complexity, and high resource consumption. This article analyses the economic impact of chronic wounds, focusing on healthcare management and sustainability, through a narrative review of recent literature. Economic studies, systematic reviews, international guidelines, and care-organization papers were considered. Evidence shows that chronic wounds generate direct costs for consultations, treatments, hospitalizations, medical devices, and professional time, as well as indirect costs related to productivity loss, functional dependence, and reduced quality of life. Findings indicate that costs are aggravated by late detection, fragmented care, lack of standardized protocols, and recurrent complications. Conversely, integrated models, structured prevention, multidisciplinary teams, and early monitoring can reduce avoidable costs and improve clinical outcomes. It is concluded that chronic wounds should be addressed as both a clinical and management issue, requiring health policies focused on prevention, care integration, professional training, and systematic economic evaluation.
