Abstract

Population aging is a global concern, especially in Europe and Portugal, with projections indicating a significant increase in the elderly population by 2050. This phenomenon impacts areas such as work, the economy, and above all, health, requiring approaches that promote quality active aging. Dehydration in institutionalized elderly individuals is a growing concern, given the vulnerabilities associated with this population. This study aims to explore the causes, consequences, and risk management strategies associated with dehydration, contributing to more effective care practices. This article aims to analyze the risk factors, health impacts, and intervention strategies related to dehydration in institutionalized elderly individuals, aiming to improve their quality of life. To this end, the following methodology was used: a literature review between 2014 and 2023 focused on dehydration in elderly residents in institutions. The search was conducted in databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria included books, theses, and peer-reviewed articles in Portuguese and English. The qualitative approach allowed for the identification of relevant trends and divergences. The results point to several risk factors, such as cognitive impairment, malnutrition, and comorbidities. Different prevalence rates were observed, and intervention strategies such as vocational training, awareness campaigns, environmental changes, and specific measures were identified. Geographical disparities and the need for multidisciplinary approaches are highlighted. The study concludes that dehydration in institutionalized elderly individuals is multifaceted. Preventive strategies and personalized interventions are essential to ensure healthy aging and a better quality of life.
