Abstract

Social security is considered mandatory and is a key element for the well-being of people worldwide. People need security from birth, throughout their lives, until death. Many scholars argue that social security is fundamental to promoting equity and reducing social vulnerability, as well as being crucial for a country's economic development. Authors such as Amartya Sen and Gosta Esping-Andersen, for example, discuss social security in the context of social welfare and justice. In this way, social security (SS) is strongly linked to the quality of life of citizens. Thus, the more secure people are, and the more effectively secure the economic and social dimensions are, the higher the quality of life is for citizens. Therefore, it becomes extremely important to reflect on Social Security in a developing country like Mozambique, particularly regarding the socioeconomic conditions that dictate the Quality of Life (QoL) indicators for pensioners. Thus, the main research question was: What is the impact of pensions administered by the National Social Security Institute (NSSI) on the quality of life of retirees? This initial question aims to verify the economic impact of mandatory social security on the quality of life of retirees. To achieve this objective, a quantitative approach was used, employing a questionnaire survey as the primary data collection instrument. From the findings, it was concluded that the activities carried out by the NSSI do not have a positive impact on the quality of life of pensioners, thus failing to meet the expectations of pensioners because they do not contribute to benefiting with dignity from the fundamental right to social security, in view of the well-being of the citizen, as enshrined in the Charter of Human Rights and defended by the World Organization of Workers
