Abstract

This study aims to determine authors who are major producers of science in research institutions in Mozambique and their position in the classification lists of co-authorship of the scientific research projects in which they participated, published in the Scopus database in the period 1993-2019. 3661 publications from Mozambique were retrieved and scientometric analysis was carried out by institution, scientific area and authors. To determine the number of major science producers who published on behalf of Mozambique in the period 1993-2019, Price's law of elitism was used. The selection of authors to join Price's elite was made using the criteria suggested by the present study. The search in the Scopus, Google and Google Scholar databases for names and titles of their publications made it possible to identify those authors with full contractual ties with research institutions in Mozambique and the position occupied by each of them in the classification lists of co-authorship of the research in which they participated. The results show that the major producers of science in Mozambique (elites) are researchers who published on behalf of UEM (47%), CISM (17%) and INS (12%); between 50% and 88% of members of the elites with full contractual ties with research institutions in Mozambique occupy an intermediate (peripheral) position in the co-authorship classification lists, that is, they were neither main authors nor more renowned scientists of such research projects.
